Using Breathwork to Empower and Heal: A Mindful Moment with Suffolk’s Youth

I recently had the privilege of leading a wellness session with Hope for Suffolk, a nonprofit organization that’s making a profound impact on the youth of Suffolk, Virginia. The session, graciously hosted by Westminster Presbyterian Church, focused on the power of therapeutic breathing techniques—simple yet transformative tools that help regulate stress, improve focus, and support emotional well-being.

Throughout our time together, we explored a variety of breathwork practices, including diaphragmatic breathing, box breathing, and alternate nostril breathing. These techniques aren’t just exercises—they’re accessible, everyday tools that can help young people feel more grounded, present, and in control of their emotions.

What stood out most was the openness and curiosity of the participants. They embraced the experience with enthusiasm, and it was inspiring to witness their willingness to try something new and reflect on how breath can be a source of strength and calm.

Hope for Suffolk continues to do incredible work by nurturing not only the minds and bodies of local youth but also their spirits. Through mentorship, job training, and urban farming, they’re creating a space where young people can grow with confidence, purpose, and community support.

If you’re looking to support meaningful change or get involved, I encourage you to learn more about their mission at hopeforsuffolk.org. It’s organizations like these—and the communities that support them—that remind us healing often begins with something as simple as a breath.
